Well well well!
Yes somebody found me worthy enough to write a poem on!
Well let me introduce Ria Shah who has been a friend for quite sometime. The best thing about her is that she is always ready to listen to whatever crap I have to say.
Ok I'm not taking a shot at flattery here and without much non-sense, I will present the poem she has written about ME!

I am a happy man, I finally have Fedora Core 8 running on my machine that too with no risks of loosing Dell's support on the laptop as they support only Windows XP and Vista!
Yeah, VMWare it is baby!
VMWare 6 and Fedora Core 8 with the new version of Ananconda is a cakewalk for even a n00b!!
Well, I definitely count myself in that category and so it is good news for y'all!!
If you have a Dell or any other brand's laptop running some version of Windows with your laptop's manufacturer supporting only Windows and you're craving to lay your hands on a Linux baby, get VMWare!!!
I did have a hard time finding a Linux installation DVD as the SuSe disk I was supposed to get came out to be corrupt and Ubuntu ships only their shitty Live CD now.
That was one hell of a disappointment.
I got this Fedora Core 8 DVD free with the December issue of Linux for You magazine!
I dont normally subscribe to it but the moment I saw it was offering what I wanted so badly, gotcha!!

The world of Geeks!

This one comes to my mind from what happened yesterday. A fellow geeky friend of mine suddenly asked me if I could allow him access to my system for a minute or so. I knew he wanted to get a feel of a computer running Windows Vista and probably see what I was doing with it!
Well yeah of course I know what one can do in that time but this was a genuine honest request from a friend who's been living without a computer for quite some time now. Poor fellow sits at office after work to let his mind satiate its intellectual desires.
So I decided to play Mr Nice and allowed him access using a Remote Support Software (e.g. VNC, LogMeIn, XpressRemote etc) and gave him 20 seconds!
And when he finally got in, I could sense the pleasure he derived...it was like a small little baby playing with a toy he loves, looking around in all awe and veneration. He loved the changes Vista brings with itself and then when I unfurled a few tucks from the corners and showed him the devices connected all he could exclaim was "Come on now, that's show off!"
Yeah that's really show off, in the world of Geeks Computer Hardware is something to show off, Operating Systems or Applications are "SEXY", they can be used to induce jealousy!
Whoa! The world we live in is so ruled by machines...
I wonder if the modern interpretations of the Apocalypse prophecy would actually come true one day...something that we saw in the Terminator series of movies.

MingW working with Windows Vista Home Premium!

I know that is not news! The problem was solved ages ago but I am writing about it because I solved it day before yesterday and finally could have some C/C++ code working on my laptop.

For those of you who still face problems with running gcc (using MingW) on Windows Vista and see the error "Could not exec cc1plus" try out the following.
If you're using an IDE (I use Code::Blocks) then go to your Compiler settings (Settings>Compiler Settings>Programs for Code::Blocks v1.0, rc2) and just add an additional path to the directory that contains the cc1plus.exe file. In my case it is located in "C:\MinGW\libexec\gcc\mingw32\3.4.5"
and would be located in a similar location on your computer assuming you've installed MingW in the root folder of your C drive and have installed gcc version 3.4.5.
Once you've added this path to your Compiler paths you should be ready to run!

In case you dont use any IDE and are more of a "Command Line" geek then just add the path to the aforesaid file in your "Path" environment variable. You could do that by pasting the following line at Command Prompt, again assuming that you have installed gcc version 3.4.5 and in the root folder of your C drive (C drive).

"PATH path %path%;c:\mingw\;c:\mingw\bin;c:\mingw\libexec\gcc\mingw32\3.4.5\"

Early Morning Blues...

Waking up at 0345 in the morning has a flavor of its own.
The cool weather outside, the rumble of heavy vehicles from the highway, the distant howl of the dog, the barking attack of that rowdy group of dogs that welcomes the odd human being, and the pin drop silence otherwise...
The beautiful sky with those twinkling stars and planets which gradually fade away, superseded by the emerging redness of the sky, wait a minute, that doesn't happen yet.
It will happen after an hour or so!
And then all of a sudden from nowhere you remember the stiff targets you've set for yourself, the dream that woke you up at this odd hour of the night...shit, I gotta run!
I've got to get to work! Get some coffee and get to work!

The Gift

The Gift I forgot to give to my friend in Mumbai was sent by post along with a few niceties and was duly appreciated.
Even though one shortcoming was found which actually gave me ideas for the future, everything else went well.
The letter I sent along with the gifts was liked the most!
I thought I have to write about the my act of redemption to save grace!

If you stay in Bangalore, dont plan your day by the minute specially if you are to travel in the city, definitely plan extra hours and not minutes for getting anything done!

Wow!
I had planned to reach home by 2000 hrs today and plans from there on at home, incidentally I reached home at 2115 despite leaving office at 1915!!!
2 hours to travel 33kms! Imagine the speed of travel!

Just a comparison, it had taken me about 35 miutes to travel 35 kms from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem! Are we really going to sustain our growth if most of the working population of the country spends more hours in traffic than at work?
Authorities...please do something and do it fast...dont just make plans and put things in the "pipeline."

Me, Men and a failure at the attempt of being surprisingly nice and charming

Diwali!
That was when I paid a visit to the city of big dreams in our country...the business capital, the film capital and what not. I found Mumbai living upto my expectations by the word and I simply fell in love with the city even though I didn't have too many reasons for it.
About Mumbai and Diwali in a later post but this one's about how close I reached to demystifying the common womenfolk belief that guys are the most forgetful creatures to have walked on this planet and how far I ended up in doing it...(Reminds me of Sachin's recent string of 90+ scores but the failure to reach the 3 figure mark shouts out loud)...

Ok lets draw away the curtains...
I have this very wonderful friend of mine Nidhi who lives in Mumbai. Ever since we spent those 5 hours roaming around the Vienna airport and chatting along nonchalantly, we have become really good friends with a, the way she likes to put it and I agree to it, pretty good chemistry between the two of us.
So it all started after that meeting after which she went to Oslo and I to Tel Aviv and we had promised about bringing back a gift to each other from those respective places.
Nidhi likes to believe that all the problems in the world are because of "men"...the "species" are stupid...they dont know what love and care is and what not.
And I always try to prove to her that opinions can only be formed about individuals and not about "species" and I constantly make attempts at thwarting her myths.

We were supposed to meet each other after almost 5 months in my trip to Mumbai this Diwali (11/09/2007).
I knew she remembered about my gift and she would surely bring it and I also knew that she will not by any chance expect me to take her gift with me to Mumbai...Bingo! I thought I had something up my sleeve to pleasantly surprise her and impress her and may be, just may be making her believe that opinions really can only be about individuals! Yes I was extremely excited thinking about her possible reactions when she'd see me actually remembering to get the gift for a person who I have met only once in my life.
I woke up early from the loooooooong Diwali celebrations which went pretty much into the wee hours and I got ready to meet Nidhi! I took out the gift from my bag and kept it ready.
Whoa! I was going to surprise her and probably impress her too!
I had to take the Mumbai Local train as it is supposed to be the fastest means of travelling in Mumbai and so I did. I think there were 5 stations to cross before I was to reach my destination and by the time my train crossed the 2nd station......
Damn! Why do I feel I am forgetting something?
Shit...I forgot to carry it with me...how could I do that!
All the way from Tel Aviv to Bangalore to Mumbai and now how could I forget it in Mumbai!
Damn!
And hence I failed at my plans of once just once impressing her by completely outdoing the "species" she believes is stale.

Some other time, some other day...
The title of this blog is "Never Say die...", dont forget it! ;-)

By the way she's a lovely person and a gem of a friend...I feel blessed to have met her and known her.

Another day...

Another day passes by and I wonder what did I learn and what did I do today?

Oh yes I learnt a lot today!
A lot about convergent networks and of omnipotent devices that will form the future of telecom!

But who the hell cares!

2 months!

Shit I realized I haven't posted anything in the last two months!
Even though I have had so many things to write about...
And I am again short on time today.
Gotta finish a buttload of work within the next 25 minutes and wow, am I concentrating!

I am promising myself that I will post about the random stupid thoughts that have been coming to my mind off late...by the end of this week!

That day in the pub on the dance floor

On one of the times I went to this Pub by the beach when at Tel Aviv I had this interesting encounter with a beautiful girl...
It goes as this:

There was this group of 4 girls.
They were dancing near to where I was standing.
And while they were dancing one of them was smiling at me.
I politely smiled back.
She signaled me to join them in the dance.
I obliged.
And then she started talking in Hebrew!
Kaushik: I’m sorry, I speak English!
Girl: English! (Laughs aloud with her friends)
Kaushik: (thinks to himself) What’s so funny with that?
Girl: Are you English?
Kaushik: No I am from India.
Girl: India!!!! Coooooll!! Namaasthe! (points to her forehead, looked like a gesture signifying the Bindi)
Kaushik: (thinks to himself) If only you saw the modern day Indian girl…
Girl: (Folding her hands and trying to put up a typical bollywood dance act) Do you know Indian dance?
Kaushik: (thinks to himself) Shit I don’t want to make a fool of myself. (Speaks) Actually, we dance like that only on
special occasions.
Girl: (with a concerned look) Ooh, ok. What do you do?
Kaushik: I work in the high tech industry. (In Israel IT/Electronics is called Hi-tech in the common man’s language).
Girl: Ooooo….So you’re very intelligent?
Kaushik: I don’t think so. I know how to fool my employers and they think I am intelligent.
In the mean time, the DJ plays nice music which sounds like music to me too as it is the remix version of one of my favorite songs, “Smells like Teen Spirit.” So I kinda dance. I know that sounds extremely weird but I did dance.
Kaushik: What do you do?
Girl: I am a waitress. But my dad doesn’t like it.
Kaushik: What does your Dad do?
Girl: He does business with Diamonds.
Kaushik: (thinks to himself) Holy shit! This is the daughter of a diamond merchant and she’s trying to flirt with me! Oh God,
I prayed to you for giving me opportunities, but not the ones of this kind!
(speaks) So you’re very rich?
Girl: Nay…my dad is very rich, I want his money.
Kaushik: (thinks to himself again) Shit, there’s a different concept here…
Girl: (Suddenly coming closer) You dance really great! Teach me… (and she comes closer, while other three girls giggle)
Kaushik: (thinks to himself, getting suspicious) Now that is a puzzle. All my life I have known myself to be among the worst
dancers on Earth. I have known the fact very well that KAUSHIK CHOUDHARY CANT DANCE.
And this lady right here says I dance great…let me see how does she dance that she can call me a good dancer.
Oh my God! She’s worse than I am!!!!
I get very happy to know that fact and I forget about all the advances she had been making to me and then,
Kaushik: You’re definitely flirting with me! Aren’t you!
Girl: (Laughs and laughs again) (Says) Why else does one come here for?

I stop feeling comfortable by the proximity of the girl, the reason being, I got a strange smell in the smoke of the cigarette she was smoking and so I excused myself somehow.
Later on I realized that cigarette was not a simple cigarette, it was certainly intoxicated.

For the record, I neither drink nor smoke and never plan to do drugs. :)

It does sound like a Hindi movie but this is what happened...though I am not too sure about whether all that I got from the girl was true.

And the girl was damn pretty but taller than me!(Even though I am 6'0")

A 70 Mega Pixel Panorama

This is a 70 Megapixel but resized view of the entire Old City of Jerusalem! All the buildings are of the same color and made of the same Limestone! This city is built over Mount Zion which houses the most sacred places on Earth of Christianity and Judaism. The moutain in front of you is where Jesus was crucified. I tool this picture from the Mount of Olives, where Jesus was said to have been in agony and there is a church named "The Church of Agony" behind me (not in this picture). It was a once in a life time experience going to Jerusalem and after seeing such old places I feel this was the place to come for work! And yes Jerusalem is where you see a lot of Arabs. More pictures to follow to show you exactly how the city and the people look but for now enjoy this!

I finally met some Muslims (Palestinians) here...
Ok my taxi driver yesterday morning was one.
He asked me which country I was from and the moment I said India he asked me about a very familiar name!
He said, "India! Amitabh Bachchan...I no understand da languaage but I see Indiaan film, Amitabh Bachchan"
and then he gave me another news which I didn't know!
"India Israel brothers! Israel, Palestine, Insha allah....India Muslim, Israel Muslim...!"
(No offence)

And today morning my taxi driver offered me a Benson and Hedges cigerrette and when I said NO he offered me beer which I declined too!
He just threw up his arms!

About the girls...well forget about the beach as most of the girls on the beaches are tourists.
But see the girls in the streets...I wouldn't mind saying, God makes and sends the most beautiful and pretty women in the world to Israel.
They are simply so very beautiful....
I mean almost every 3rd or 4th girl is a damsel!

I am thinking of asking my Mom to stop worrying about finding a girl for me.

but yes they scream a lot here in Israel.
Probably that is how they talk.
Everybody except in the office is screaming!

And about work,
This Russian guy who's come here is a genius!
He's from a company called Spirit who deal with media codec designing and stuff...
He's from Moscow and I am to work with for the rest of my stay here in Israel.

I mean he exudes knowledge in his words!

I am simply amazed!
He fixed 2 out of 8 major issues within half an hour!
He came in like a complete geek, with his own set of hardware and gadgets to connect to his laptop while working and the moment his machine was ready he was flying!

Wow!

but the language is a problem.

His English is a Z prefixed language!

Something like,

Normal: "So that could be a problem and this is how we can fix it"

Alex (Russian guy) : "Zso zthat khould be a probelame and zthis is how we can fixz it"\

Sounds funny huh!

Deal with it all day and you'll know!

And most importantly it has been not even a week and I have started missing home. :(

P.S. :I went to a discotheque and danced around for the first time in my life! And I liked the experience! Will go again for sure when I find time again!

Tel Aviv and Israeli Food - I

Ok, the place where I am staying is the heart and centre of the city.
A 5-10 minutes walk from the beach.
My apartment is a single room studio apartment with a bathroom, kitchenette, and a balcony that opens towards the main street.
Things are pretty expensive here if you convert your expenses to INR. :)
Coke is much cheaper than water.

a 250 ml of water bottle that costs Rs 9 in India now costs something around Rs 70 here!
Coke cans are Rs 45-50 or something.
Most shops keep open till 0300 hrs in the night!
Its all safe as you can see girls who by the Indian standards are almost always scantily clad, move around all night and I see them walking alone.

No signs of Army in the city except for the one off soldier waiting for a vehicle or something....probably they go to Jerusalem as I see them on the road to Jerusalem.
Traffic is superfast here. (120 kmph is normal speed)
Taxis are anything between a Skoda Octavia and a Mercedez Benz.
It takes just 40 minutes from here to Jerusalem which is 60 kms away!

Food!
At office, my peers take me to a different restaurant everyday so that I get to taste as much Israeli food as possible.

At night, the first night here I just played safe and took a burger from McDonalds and yesterday I had a Shavarma Roll which is actually Arab food and I have had it in Bangalore.
But in Bangalore it is Chicken and here it is Turkey.
Not much beef is eaten here. they say it is 99% Chicken/Turkey.

I had "Chicken Breast with some kinda sauce yesterday" (I dont exactly remember the name) and I had "Shikar kua" or something like that and tasted a little bit of "Homos"
The first one is a dish made of eggs and tomato sauce with lots of other stuff in it and the other one was I dont know what. It was supposed to be taken with Peter bread which looks similar to the buns we have in India, just a little more flat and the speciality is that it has a pouch in it!

People eat rather early here, Lunch is at 1100 hrs!
The office is good, you have 5 different types of coffee and 2 types of Tea to choose from.

fortunately there is water too! yes I have been craving for it...they dont drink water at all...

Beer, Milk, Fruits anything you want and as much as you want...I take only the fruits.
People are friendly.
I will explore the city more once I have a little more time after tomorrow and will send you updates. :)

We Indians are now making our dreams come true...
The dream of seeing every child getting proper education, the dream of healthy food and shelter for every single citizen of the country, the dream of being a pioneer of innovation, the dream of being a world leader, the dream of being among the uniformly prosperous countries of the world.
And we're doing it, slowly and steadily but we're making progress.
Though the boom in the economy cannot be deemed slow but at the grass root level, the progress is still slow but not absent.
Its because we're working our asses off to make our dreams come true.
And the magnitude of our dreams knows no bounds...
Here goes to show the world, that we Indians are not hesitant about dreaming!
I found a live example last month while I was traveling from Chennai to Mahabalipuram on my friend's scooter!

Funny error message

Ok it has been quite a long time since I posted anything at all..
Though I did write a few drafts and deleted them, thought I'd rather live in the present and not be sadistic to the reader, talking about things long lost!

Anyway, enough of crap...
Let me get to the funny parts!
Most of you know I dont really love my manager, rarely..
So its not really difficult to imagine my feelings when he's seen around my desk more often than not.
I was writing an interesting piece of code and was in my elements and so...
I ended up doing (not really unintentionally this time though) what I always used to do when I was in college.
Report errors to the user of my software in a rather not so polite manner.
Actually there was a place in the software where the user was supposed to enter a file name to retrieve some info from that file.
And an error message was to be displayed when he entered an invalid file name.

Now tell me how glad you would be to use software which gives you an error message saying,

“Incorrect file name! Why don’t you read the user’s guide properly? If you can’t do that you don’t deserve to use this software. Go to hell!”
This just popped up when my Manager was reviewing the code and testing it!

My team mate fell out of her chair laughing…
If only I had foreseen this happening....
There'd have been a lot more in that error message for sure!

Mozilla Firefox 2.0 - Has it been troubling you?

Mozilla Firefox, very often touted as the best browser in the world (I do agree with that),
has been updating its version after versions and in the process is adding more and more features which is expected.
However, what it also is doing is that it is getting heavier and heavier as an application.
I'm sure people using Firefox 2.0 will definitely agree if they're in a habit of having umpteen number of tabs open and continue working with other applications as well.

The problem I want to talk about is that the Firefox which used to consume only around 6-11 MB in the good old times now ends up consuming around 60MB sometimes even 100MB of memory!
And if you have other heavy applications running on your computer (read Windows) just stops responding...gives you time to have some coffee and come back whilst it comes back to life as in it finishes processing whatever it is processing and comes back to interactive mode.

Now that's frustrating...at least I find it frustrating.
Is there a way out??
Yes I found it....though most you may know and most of you may not...
but it is always good to share knowledge (I'm a firm believer of ancient Indian philosophy which states that "Knowledge always increases on sharing") :)

Ok Enough of theory…lets get our hands dirty.

The question is how?

1. Open Firefox
2. Open a new tab
3. Type “about:config” (without the quotes of course)
4. You will see a configuration panel
5. Right click on any value on the leftmost column
6. Select New > Boolean
7. Enter the preference name as “config.trim_on_minimize” (without quotes)
8. Set the value to True

Restart firefox and see the magic!

Open task manager and see the processes tab. Click on memory usage,

Open a few tabs and websites on firfox and see the memory used, minimize Firefox and see the memory usage, you’ll see magic!!!

Normally Firefox, as I mentioned, will take around 40-60 MB of memory (v 2.0, click on Help> About to see version), but after doing as stated above,

each time you minimize Firefox you’ll see the memory usage drop down to around 3-6 MB!
Isn’t that great????

But remember you have to click on minimize to see the difference!!!

If you run tons of applications as I do, and are forced to keep a track of the memory usage when you have only 1 GB of RAM, this is a great respite!

Oh yes there are other alternatives I forgot to suggest:

1. Get more RAM!!
2. Get Linux!
   

Oh by the way, for starters you may download Mozilla Firefox from the official Mozilla website.

On a day like today...

A day when I feel like bringing out my middle finger to everybody around me.
Wow..
The tormenting SIGSEGV is gone, but the new teachings from the new life are showered all around and I've spent the day in saving myself from getting wet!

People aspire and dream for them...I say "fuck them"

yes...that's true.
You should not examine things and learn...
All you should try to learn is how to copy and paste stuff.
Why think of a better solution when one already exists?
Why think afresh when you can copy from what another man has done.
You cannot be better than the other person.
They say that to me...
TO ME!
People who are supposed to share responsibilities happily say-
If it is an achievement - "We did a great job on that one!!"
And if it is a minor mistake - "You could have done better" or "Why did you do it that way?"
I only reply with a smile to the couple of statements mentioned above...
And that's exactly what I feel when I face such statements...I smile to myself completely awed by the chivalrous acts that I get to witness. :)
Was it my laziness or was it just plain ignorance that led me to these slumps?
No...that's not happening.

No way, I am back to business....my camera has left me and gone to the service center for two days...
So I am back to my first love, the Computer.

and this SIGSEGV keeps coming back.
I have allocated memory correctly, then why???

May God bless me with more patience, it has been 7 hrs with this same SIGSEGV and now it is making me doubt my brain.
When will I get rid of it and go home???
